Orlando Pirates legend Andries Sebola has defended striker Sebastian Pedersen amid growing questions about his performances, urging supporters to remain patient and give the Norwegian forward enough time to prove his worth at the club.
Pedersen, who has been nicknamed “Baby Haaland” by some supporters because of his Norwegian background and striking role, has faced scrutiny over his limited playing time and his contribution to the Buccaneers' attack. However, Sebola believes it is too early to judge the striker and insists that he could become an important player for the Soweto giants.
According to Sebola, Pirates must have seen potential in Pedersen when they decided to sign him. He believes the club recruited the striker with the future in mind and that he needs time to settle into his new environment and develop an understanding with his teammates.
“When they signed him, they saw the future. It’s a matter of time, and given a chance to know his teammates, I think he will make it,” Sebola said.
The former Pirates striker expressed confidence that Pedersen would eventually rise to the occasion if he receives the necessary support and opportunities. He also believes the Norwegian can provide valuable competition for the other forwards in the squad.
“The boy will rise to the occasion. He is not a bad player. He will give competition to the other strikers that have been there,” Sebola added.
His comments come at a time when some Pirates supporters have also raised concerns about the performances of striker Evidence Mbuthuma. Sebola pointed out that Mbuthuma's form has been inconsistent, suggesting that the team needs competition among its attacking players rather than placing all the pressure on one individual.
The Pirates legend also highlighted the challenge Pedersen faces in adapting to a new football environment. Moving to another country and joining a different team can take time, particularly when a player must adjust to new teammates, playing styles and tactical expectations.
Sebola further explained that Pedersen's situation should not be compared directly with that of Mamelodi Sundowns striker Brayan León, arguing that the two players are in different team environments.
For Orlando Pirates, having several reliable attacking options will be important as the club continues to compete on multiple fronts. Pedersen could still become a valuable asset if he adapts successfully and makes the most of his opportunities.
Sebola's message is clear: supporters should avoid judging the striker too quickly. While expectations are high at a club like Pirates, patience could give the Norwegian forward the opportunity to demonstrate his true abilities.
Whether Pedersen can eventually win over the Buccaneers faithful remains to be seen, but Sebola believes the striker deserves more time before a final judgement is made.
