Still in charge - just differently - Motsepe’s ARM exit explained - no change at Sundowns or CAF

Mamelodi Sundowns owner and mining magnate Patrice Motsepe has stepped down as executive chairman of African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), clarifying that the decision is a direct response to updated Johannesburg Stock Exchange governance standards. The change ensures full compliance with revised listing rules that increasingly separate executive and non-executive leadership functions to strengthen board independence and oversight.

Motsepe will continue to serve the company as non-executive chairman, maintaining strategic involvement without day-to-day operational responsibilities. Significantly, the transition does not affect his commitments to African football. As president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and custodian of Mamelodi Sundowns, he confirmed his prominent roles across the sport remain unchanged. The reigning Betway Premiership champions stay under his ownership and direction as they pursue domestic and continental honours.

The move balances corporate governance obligations with his enduring passion for football development across the continent. For supporters, the message is clear: the business structure has shifted, but Patrice Motsepe’s influence at Chloorkop and in African football remains as strong as ever.
