MOKOENA PUTS SOUTH AFRICAN FOOTBALL ON AFRICA'S BIGGEST STAGE AS PSL SECURES MAJOR CAF AWARD RECOGNITION

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 5 NOVEMBER 2026

South African football has received a major boost after Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena earned a nomination for the prestigious 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Men's Player of the Year award.

Mokoena's inclusion among Africa's leading football stars is significant, as he will be representing not only himself and Sundowns but also the Premier Soccer League (PSL) on one of the continent's biggest football stages.

The 29-year-old midfielder has enjoyed an impressive period with the Brazilians, establishing himself as one of the most influential players in South African football.

His performances during the 2025/26 campaign have earned him recognition alongside some of the continent's most celebrated footballers, including Morocco's Achraf Hakimi, Senegal's Sadio Mané and Ghanaian international Antoine Semenyo.

The nomination represents another important milestone in Mokoena's career, particularly considering the level of competition in the African game.

Mokoena has been a central figure in Sundowns' midfield, bringing energy, tactical discipline, physical strength and attacking contributions. His ability to influence matches from the middle of the park has made him an important member of the club's squad.

His contribution was particularly valuable during Sundowns' successful 2025/26 CAF Champions League campaign, which ended with the Pretoria giants lifting their second continental title.

The midfielder also played an important role for Bafana Bafana, further strengthening his reputation as one of the country's outstanding football talents.
