Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has praised Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha, highlighting his outstanding qualities and ability to make an impact despite experiencing reduced playing opportunities this season.

Mbatha was previously an important figure in the Pirates midfield, establishing himself as one of the team's influential players through his energy, technical ability and impressive performances. However, his involvement has decreased following changes within the club's technical team, raising questions about his current position in the squad.

Despite the limited opportunities at club level, the midfielder has continued to demonstrate his quality whenever called upon, particularly when representing Bafana Bafana. His performances for the national team have reinforced the belief that he remains a valuable player with plenty to offer.

Khune believes Mbatha possesses qualities that make him different from many midfielders in the Premier Soccer League. The former Bafana Bafana captain specifically highlighted his powerful long-range shooting ability, drawing comparisons with former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Hlompho Kekana, who was renowned for his ability to score spectacular goals from distance.

The comparison underlines the confidence Khune has in Mbatha's technical abilities and his potential to influence matches through his shooting and midfield contributions.

Khune also praised the player's mentality and work ethic, suggesting that his reduced playing time has not affected his confidence or determination to perform whenever opportunities arise.

For Orlando Pirates, Mbatha's situation presents an interesting selection challenge as the club continues competing across domestic and continental competitions. Having a midfielder with his qualities could prove important as the season progresses.

Although regular playing time remains important for his development and consistency, Khune's assessment suggests that Mbatha should not be underestimated.

The midfielder will now be hoping to convince the Pirates technical team that he deserves a more prominent role, while continuing to demonstrate his value whenever he represents the Buccaneers and Bafana Bafana.
