Leonardo Castro Announces Retirement as Former Kaizer Chiefs Striker Prepares for Final Season

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Leonardo Castro is preparing to bring his professional football career to an end after Greenville Triumph officially confirmed that the Colombian forward will retire at the conclusion of the 2026 season.

The announcement marks the beginning of the final chapter of a career that has taken the experienced striker across different football environments, including South Africa and the United States.

Greenville Triumph confirmed the retirement plans while recognising Castro and teammate Brandon Fricke during their Fan Appreciation Night on October 17. Both players are expected to call time on their professional careers at the end of the campaign.

For Castro, the announcement brings an emotional moment for supporters who have followed his journey, particularly those who remember his contributions to South African football.

The Colombian forward became a familiar name among South African football fans during his time with Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs. He joined Sundowns before moving to Naturena in January 2018, where he became part of an attacking partnership that attracted considerable attention in the Premier Soccer League.

His time at Kaizer Chiefs included memorable performances and important goals, helping him establish a connection with the club's supporters. He also experienced the pressure and excitement that come with representing one of the biggest football institutions in South Africa.

After leaving Chiefs in 2022, Castro continued his professional journey in the United States, joining Greenville Triumph in March 2023.

He spent several seasons with the American club, contributing to its attacking department and becoming part of its history. During his first three campaigns, he scored 13, nine and eight goals respectively, demonstrating his ability to remain a useful attacking option.

His retirement announcement comes after several years of professional football, bringing an end to a journey that included domestic success, continental competition and experiences in different countries.

Although his final season has not been without challenges, Greenville Triumph have ensured that his contribution to the club will be recognised.

The club also gave supporters an opportunity to see him one last time at GE Vernova Park, when he made his final home appearance against Charlotte Independence on October 17.

Now, with the end of the season approaching, Castro has one final opportunity to enjoy the game before officially retiring from professional football.

For former Kaizer Chiefs supporters and football lovers who followed his career, it will be the end of an era for a striker who left his mark on South African football.

One last season, one final goodbye and the closing chapter of Leonardo Castro's professional football journey.
