Lekoelea Warns Ouaddou: Don't Make the Mistake of Benching Appollis Again
Lekoelea Warns Ouaddou: Pirates Legend Makes Strong Case for Appollis Ahead of African Stars Clash
Orlando Pirates legend Steve Lekoelea has raised concerns about head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s team selection ahead of the Buccaneers’ crucial CAF Champions League second-leg encounter against Namibia’s African Stars, with Oswin Appollis emerging as a key talking point.
The Soweto giants welcome African Stars to the Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday, 23 October, knowing that victory or a suitable aggregate result will secure their place in the Champions League group stages.
Pirates head into the encounter holding a slender 1-0 advantage after Tshepang Moremi scored the decisive goal in the first leg in Gaborone, Botswana, on 17 October.
However, the Buccaneers cannot afford to underestimate their opponents, with the Namibian champions still capable of overturning the deficit.
Lekoelea Questions Ouaddou's Selection Decisions
Lekoelea’s concerns centre on Ouaddou’s tendency to rotate his starting line-up, particularly when players are delivering encouraging performances.
The former Pirates midfielder previously warned that excessive changes could disrupt players’ momentum and negatively affect the team’s overall consistency.
He believes players who are performing well should be given sufficient opportunities to establish themselves rather than being repeatedly moved in and out of the starting eleven.
Appollis is among the players whose availability and role have attracted attention ahead of Friday’s encounter.
The talented winger was named on the bench for the first-leg clash against African Stars as he continued his recovery from an injury.
His absence from the starting line-up raised questions among supporters, especially given his attacking qualities and ability to create opportunities in the final third.
Appollis Returns to Training
There is, however, encouraging news for the Buccaneers, with Appollis returning to training ahead of the decisive encounter.
Ouaddou confirmed that the winger participated in a session designed to assess his physical condition, particularly his ability to sprint without experiencing discomfort.
The Pirates coach welcomed the progress but emphasised that the club would not take unnecessary risks with an important player.
Appollis reportedly indicated that he was no longer experiencing pain during the assessment, offering hope that he could become available for selection.
Nevertheless, returning to training does not automatically guarantee a starting place, as the technical team must determine whether he is physically ready for the intensity of competitive football.
Pirates Face a Crucial Test
For Pirates, Friday's encounter represents an important opportunity to return to the CAF Champions League group stages after last season's disappointing elimination at the same preliminary-round stage.
Ouaddou has repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining concentration, insisting that the first-leg victory does not mean qualification is already secured.
The Buccaneers will need to balance tactical discipline with attacking ambition against an African Stars side determined to fight back.
Appollis’ potential involvement could provide an additional attacking dimension, but his fitness must remain a priority.
Ultimately, Ouaddou faces an important selection decision. While Lekoelea’s concerns highlight the importance of consistency, the Pirates coach must decide whether Appollis is ready to start or whether a more cautious approach would better serve the team’s ambitions.
