Aden a Late Sub as Sabah Lose

Bafana Bafana defender Aden McCarthy came on as a second-half substitute as Sabah FK lost 3-2 to Turan Tovuz in the Misli Premier League on Friday afternoon. The result ended Sabah’s perfect start to the season and handed them their first league defeat of the campaign.

Turan Tovuz took control early at their home ground. Henrique Silva scored first, and Jo Batista added a second before the break to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at half-time. Sabah made changes at the interval, with McCarthy replacing a teammate as the visitors tried to get back into the game.

The second half was more open. Jo Batista scored again for Turan Tovuz to make it 3-0, but Sabah responded. Joy Lance Mickels pulled one goal back, and Xander Severina scored later to reduce the deficit to 3-2. Despite the late fight, Sabah could not find an equaliser. The match finished 3-2 in favour of Turan Tovuz.

McCarthy, 22, has adapted quickly since joining Sabah from Kaizer Chiefs in June. The centre-back is the son of former Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy. He has already gained experience in the UEFA Champions League with his new club, starting against Manchester United and later scoring in a match against Borussia Dortmund. He also played in Sabah’s first-ever Champions League win against Slavia Prague.

Before Friday’s defeat, Sabah sat near the top of the Misli Premier League table and looked strong in both domestic and European competitions. The loss means they drop points, but they remain well placed as the season continues. McCarthy has featured regularly since arriving in Azerbaijan and is expected to stay an important part of the defence.

For the young South African, the substitute appearance is another step in his European journey. After a solid season with Kaizer Chiefs, the move abroad has given him regular football at a higher level. Bafana supporters will follow his progress as he works to earn more national team opportunities under the current coaching staff.

Sabah will now focus on bouncing back in their next league game. They still have a full domestic campaign ahead and more Champions League matches to play. McCarthy’s presence on the pitch on Friday shows the club’s trust in the Bafana defender as they aim to stay competitive on both fronts.
