Mamelodi Sundowns Receive Encouraging Update on Teboho Mokoena's Injury

Mamelodi Sundowns supporters have reason to remain hopeful about Teboho Mokoena’s recovery after the midfielder suffered another injury setback during the club’s CAF Champions League encounter against Wiliete SC. The latest developments have brought renewed attention to his fitness, with coach Miguel Cardoso hoping that the Bafana Bafana international will be back on the football pitch quickly.

Mokoena’s latest setback came during Sundowns’ 0-0 draw against Wiliete in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie in Angola on Sunday, 18 October. The midfielder was forced off in the first half after experiencing discomfort involving the same ligament he injured while representing South Africa during the recent international break.

The incident was particularly concerning because Mokoena had already experienced difficulties with his fitness earlier in the campaign. His previous injury problems also raised questions about whether he had been rushed back into action before fully recovering.

Cardoso addressed the situation after the match, explaining that the medical team still needed to establish the extent of the problem. The Portuguese coach confirmed that Mokoena would undergo further examinations and expressed hope that the setback would not be serious enough to keep him out for an extended period.

The encouraging aspect for Sundowns is that the coach has not suggested a lengthy absence. However, supporters should distinguish between optimism about a quick recovery and an officially confirmed return date.

Mokoena’s importance to the Brazilians makes the situation particularly significant. He has become one of the club’s most influential midfielders, offering physical strength, defensive protection, ball distribution and the ability to contribute going forward.

His influence was also evident in the MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates on 10 October. Despite not being completely pain-free following his previous injury, Mokoena started the match and scored the opening goal as Sundowns secured a 2-0 victory to lift the trophy.

That performance demonstrated his importance to Cardoso’s plans, but it also highlighted the need to manage his fitness carefully. Having an influential midfielder available for the biggest matches is valuable, but ensuring that he remains fit throughout a demanding season is equally important.

Sundowns are currently balancing their domestic ambitions with the responsibility of defending their continental title. The goalless first-leg result against Wiliete means that the return encounter at Loftus Versfeld carries considerable importance.

Without Mokoena, Cardoso may have to rely more heavily on alternative midfield combinations, including Bathusi Aubaas. Although Sundowns have sufficient squad depth, replacing Mokoena’s particular combination of experience, physicality and tactical discipline is not straightforward.

There is also a wider concern for Bafana Bafana. Mokoena remains an important figure in the national team’s midfield, and his fitness will matter as South Africa continues preparing for its upcoming international commitments.

For now, the priority should be allowing the medical team to manage his recovery properly rather than rushing him back because of the importance of upcoming fixtures.

Sundowns supporters will welcome any positive news about their midfielder, especially after seeing him stretchered off in Angola. Cardoso’s optimism offers encouragement, but the real measure of progress will be Mokoena’s ability to return fully fit and maintain his fitness over the remainder of the campaign.

The Brazilians need their midfield general for the challenges ahead, and his long-term availability could prove just as important as his immediate return.
