After leading Tanzanian powerhouses Young Africans to the group stages of the CAF Champions League, Manqoba Mngqithi, a former coach of Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows, reached yet another major milestone in his coaching career.
After taking over as Yanga coach, Mngqithi got off to a great start, leading the team to victory in the Community Shield and a spot in the quarterfinals of Africa's top club competition. His most recent success further solidifies his standing as a coach who can compete on the greatest stage of African football.
In Wednesday's second leg of their second preliminary round tie, Young Africans confirmed their qualification with a 4-1 victory over Madagascar side CFFA. With this win, Tanzania became the first team this season to advance to the group stage, and they won the match by an emphatic 8-1 aggregate score.
The hosts took an early lead thanks to a goal from Ibrahim Kazimoto in the 27th minute. In the second half, the Young Africans continued their unstoppable force, with goals from Selemani Mwalimu in the 49th and 53rd minutes putting the game out of CFFA's reach.
Despite a consolation goal for the visitors in the 75th minute, Yanga's three-goal advantage was restored in the 82nd minute by teenager Juma Issa Abushuri.
As the Young Africans aim for continental glory, the qualification gives Mngqithi a chance to pit his squad against some of the best clubs in the continent.
At the same time, Mngqithi has made assertions regarding an earlier chance to coach Kaizer Chiefs. Reportedly, he thought the transfer budget proposed by Amakhosi was inadequate, so he turned down their offer.
Mngqithi claims the club was willing to pay R20 million to sign seven players. He claimed that Sundowns could have signed one Premier Soccer League player with that sum during his tenure there.
There has been no independent confirmation of the offer details that have been reported.
As the Young Africans get ready for the CAF Champions League group stages, Mngqithi will be concentrating on keeping their momentum going.
