Kwanele Kopo Reveals How He Convinced Ronwen Williams Not To Quit Football After His Brother’s Death

Bafana Bafana captain and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams came close to walking away from football following the tragic death of his older brother, Marvin, but the intervention of former coach Kwanele Kopo helped change the course of his career.

Kopo has opened up about the emotional conversation that convinced Williams to return to the sport during one of the most difficult periods of his life.

The heartbreaking incident occurred in 2010, when Williams was still developing his career at SuperSport United’s academy. The young goalkeeper was travelling with his team to Cape Town for the Bayhill Under-19 tournament when news reached the squad that his brother had passed away.

Williams was immediately flown back to Gqeberha, then known as Port Elizabeth, to be with his family. Kopo explained that the club initially gave him a month away from football to grieve and recover from the devastating loss.

However, Williams did not return when the period ended. The grief had affected him so deeply that he was considering abandoning the game altogether.

Kopo said he eventually contacted the young goalkeeper and pleaded with him to reconsider his decision. He also spoke to Williams’ mother as he tried to persuade him to return to the academy and continue pursuing his football ambitions.

According to Kopo, the message that ultimately resonated with Williams was the idea that continuing to play football could be a way of honouring his late brother.

He reminded the goalkeeper that Marvin would not have wanted him to give up something he loved because of the tragedy.

The encouragement helped Williams find a reason to continue, although his return to football was not immediate.

Since then, Williams has developed into one of South Africa’s most recognised goalkeepers, captaining Bafana Bafana and becoming an important figure for Mamelodi Sundowns.

His journey has also carried a deeply personal meaning, with the goalkeeper continuing to remember his brother through his achievements on the field.
