Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained the thinking behind his demanding management style, revealing that a lesson from former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry has influenced his approach to developing players.
The Moroccan coach spoke about his philosophy after guiding the Buccaneers to a memorable 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
Ouaddou attracted attention through his energetic behaviour on the touchline during the encounter. However, he explained that his reactions are driven by his determination to maintain high standards and ensure that his players continue working towards excellence.
Having spent 17 years playing professional football before becoming a coach, Ouaddou understands the demands associated with competing at the highest level. He believes representing a major institution such as Orlando Pirates requires commitment, discipline and a constant desire to improve.
During his explanation, the coach referred to a story from Thierry Henry's childhood. The former France international, who attended the Soweto Derby as a special guest, reportedly discussed in his book how his father pushed him to achieve more whenever he returned from youth matches.
Even after scoring four or five goals in matches in Paris, Henry's father would challenge him to perform better rather than simply celebrate his achievements.
Ouaddou said this is the kind of mentality he wants to establish within the Pirates dressing room. He wants his players to avoid becoming satisfied with their performances and instead maintain the hunger to reach higher levels.
The coach also recognised that his demanding personality does not affect every player in the same way. While some footballers thrive under his intensity, others may need time to adjust to his expectations.
