Beto Bianchi, coach of Wiliete SC, has spoken out about a phone call he received from Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza, who congratulated him on his team's CAF Champions League elimination of Mamelodi Sundowns.According to Bianchi, Khoza got in touch with him after Wiliete made it to the next round of the competition. After a 1-1 draw in the second leg at Loftus Versfeld, the Angolan side advanced on away goals and eliminated Sundowns from the continental tournament.Wiliete achieved a historic feat with this result, reaching the group stage of the CAF Champions League for the first time.
Despite facing a formidable opponent and being up against one of the most seasoned teams in Africa, the Angolan club prevailed and eliminated the current champions. After a scoreless first leg in Lubango, Sundowns hoped to advance to the next round with a win in the second leg. They got off to a good start at Loftus Versfeld, as Tashreeq Matthews scored the first goal for the home team in the 11th minute. But Wiliete's defense was well-organized, and they kept getting the better of the Brazilians.
In the 48th minute, Angolan team Cristóvão "Mabululu" Paciência equalized thanks to a defensive blunder made by Cassius Mailula, giving them a good chance to advance.Sundowns had 18 shots compared to Wiliete's six, and they created multiple opportunities, but they were unable to score the second goal they needed. All game long, Bianchi's players showed great discipline and stuck to the game plan, earning praise from the coach.Sundowns' quality and experience were expected to lead to dominant possession, according to the Wiliete coach.
But he was proud of his team's low-block defense and pressure management at Loftus Versfeld.Even though Sundowns had enough scoring opportunities, Bianchi insisted his team capitalized on them. Achieving the goal set for the season and qualifying for the group stage was the most important outcome for Wiliete.Sundowns were unable to advance past the group stage as a result, ending their hopes of defending their continental title. This was their first defeat in eleven seasons.
If Wiliete wanted to accomplish its goal, Bianchi had already made it plain that Sundowns had to go. The outcome was eventually achieved by his team, who were lauded for their tenacity and defensive play. After the first match in Angola, there was a reported altercation between Bianchi and Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela, which added drama to the buildup to the second leg.
Bianchi reportedly departed the stadium via ambulance following the incident. The attention has returned to football, though, as Wiliete celebrates a significant milestone in its history thanks to their qualification. As if the Angolan side's historic triumph wasn't already cause for celebration, Khoza reportedly called Bianchi to offer his congratulations.
