Aden McCarthy's Champions League Displays Raise Questions About His Bafana Bafana Future

Aden McCarthy has given South African football supporters another reason to discuss his international future after scoring against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League.

The former Kaizer Chiefs defender found the net for Sabah FK on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, in a match that ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Azerbaijani side.

His performance has raised an important question for Bafana Bafana supporters, should the young centre-back earn another opportunity to represent his country?

McCarthy, 22, joined Sabah FK from Kaizer Chiefs in June 2026 and has quickly established himself in the starting line-up. Against Dortmund, he played the full 90 minutes and scored Sabah's equaliser in the 39th minute.

According to reporting by The Citizen on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, the defender said the goal showed that “anything is possible”. The moment was significant for a player building his career in European football.

Dortmund had taken the lead through Serhou Guirassy in the 10th minute, putting pressure on the home side early in the encounter.

McCarthy responded by rising to meet a delivery from Tymoteusz Puchacz and directing his header past goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

The equaliser gave Sabah renewed hope before the break. However, Guirassy struck again eight minutes into the second half, restoring Dortmund's advantage and securing the German club a 2-1 victory.

McCarthy's goal could not change the result, but it provided a memorable personal milestone.

The question now is whether performances of this kind should strengthen McCarthy's case for the next Bafana Bafana squad.

The defender brings experience from South Africa's Premier Soccer League and is now testing himself against international opposition at club level.

His appearance against Dortmund also demonstrated his ability to contribute in attack from a defensive position, an additional quality that could interest national-team selectors.

However, one memorable Champions League performance should not automatically guarantee a call-up. Bafana Bafana's technical team must consider McCarthy's consistency, defensive discipline, fitness and suitability for the team's tactical plans.

Competition for places in central defence is another factor, and his performances across several matches will provide a clearer picture of his readiness for international duty.

For now, McCarthy's goal has strengthened the conversation around his potential role in South African football.

Whether the national selectors respond with another opportunity remains to be seen, but his European experience gives supporters a compelling reason to assess his progress.
