Sundowns Ladies Begin CAFWCL Campaign With Away Draw

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies began their 2026 CAF Women's Champions League campaign with a draw after playing out a goalless stalemate against Egyptian side FC Masar on Sunday evening.

The encounter took place at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia, Egypt, where the South African champions were looking to begin their continental campaign with a positive result.

Despite their efforts, Sundowns Ladies were unable to secure all three points but managed to collect an important away point against a competitive Masar side.

The result means the South African outfit will have to wait for another opportunity to record their first victory in the tournament as they continue their search for continental success.

Sundowns Ladies entered the competition with expectations of making another strong impression after establishing themselves as one of the leading women's football teams in Africa.

Their experience in the CAF Women's Champions League gives them an advantage in terms of understanding the demands of competing against some of the best clubs on the continent.

However, Sunday's encounter showed that the competition would not be an easy one, with Masar providing a difficult challenge on their home ground.

For the Sundowns technical team, the focus will now shift towards preparing the players for their remaining group-stage matches. Collecting points away from home can be important in a tournament where every result could influence qualification for the knockout stages.

The draw also gives the South African side an opportunity to assess areas that need improvement before their next assignment.

Sundowns Ladies have built a reputation for competing strongly in African women's football, and their supporters will be hoping the team can turn this opening draw into a successful group-stage campaign.

Meanwhile, Masar will also take encouragement from the result after managing to hold the South African side in front of their home supporters.

With more matches still to come, the race for qualification remains open, and Sundowns Ladies will be determined to collect maximum points in their upcoming fixtures.

Although they were unable to begin with a victory, securing an away point provides a foundation for the team to build on as they continue their journey in the 2026 CAF Women's Champions League.
