Golden Arrows head coach Mandla Ncikazi has explained why goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa has struggled to get playing time since joining the club, despite earning a preliminary call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad.

Mbanjwa's absence from the team has raised questions among supporters, particularly given his growing reputation and recognition at national level.

However, Ncikazi has made it clear that the goalkeeper's lack of appearances does not necessarily reflect a lack of quality or confidence in his abilities.

The Arrows coach believes there is no reason to change a winning or effective arrangement when the goalkeeper currently occupying the position is performing well.

“Don't fix if it's not broken. Mbanjwa is a top goalkeeper but if the other one is doing well, unfortunately he has to wait,” Ncikazi explained.

His comments suggest that Mbanjwa is facing competition for the starting position rather than being overlooked because of his ability.

The preliminary Bafana Bafana call-up represents an important milestone for the goalkeeper, highlighting the progress he has made and the attention his performances have attracted.

However, national-team recognition does not automatically guarantee a starting place at club level, where players must compete for selection and take advantage of opportunities when they arise.

For Mbanjwa, the challenge will be to remain patient, continue working hard in training and convince the technical team that he deserves an opportunity between the posts.

Ncikazi's explanation also sends a clear message about his selection philosophy: players must earn their places, and strong performances from the current first-choice goalkeeper will not be ignored simply to accommodate a new arrival.

Whether Mbanjwa will eventually break into the starting team remains to be seen.
