Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has revealed the inspiration behind his demanding coaching philosophy, explaining how a childhood story involving former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry has shaped his approach to motivating players.
The Moroccan tactician made the revelation following Pirates' impressive 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium. Ouaddou attracted considerable attention during the encounter because of his passionate touchline reactions, which reflected his determination to see his team perform at the highest possible level.
Having enjoyed a 17-year professional playing career before moving into coaching, Ouaddou believes he understands the importance of discipline, commitment and continuous improvement. He insists that representing a club with the history and expectations of Orlando Pirates requires players to maintain exceptionally high standards.
To explain his mentality, the Pirates coach shared a story about Henry's childhood in Paris. According to the story, the former Arsenal striker once scored four or five goals during a youth football match, but his father was still not satisfied with his performance.
Rather than simply celebrating his son's impressive achievement, Henry's father encouraged him to score even more goals. For Ouaddou, that story represents the mentality required to become successful in football.
The Pirates coach wants his players to adopt a similar attitude by refusing to become comfortable with their achievements and constantly searching for ways to improve.
Ouaddou also acknowledged that his emotional coaching style affects players differently. While some respond positively to his passionate demands, others may initially find the intensity difficult to handle.
Nevertheless, he believes managing those emotions is part of developing a competitive team.
Pirates' recent performances, including their important Soweto Derby triumph, suggest that his approach is producing encouraging results. The victory over Chiefs also strengthened the Buccaneers' position in the Betway Premiership title race.
Ouaddou remains determined to push his players further, insisting that his demanding nature is driven by one objective: making Orlando Pirates better and helping the club achieve greater success.
