Back
South African football agent Mike Makaab has shed light on the circumstances behind Qobolwakhe Sibande’s return to the Betway Premiership, explaining why the defender opted to leave Egyptian side Petrojet SC and rejoin Stellenbosch FC on loan.
Sibande’s move attracted attention because it came just months after he secured an opportunity to play in the Egyptian Premier League. The 26-year-old left-back joined Petrojet in January 2026 after leaving TS Galaxy, opening a new chapter in his professional career.
However, his stay in Egypt was relatively short, with Stellenbosch confirming his return on a season-long loan deal on 31 July 2026.
The decision raised questions among South African football supporters, particularly those who expected the defender to spend more time testing himself outside the country.
Makaab Explains The Situation
According to a report by KickOff published on 30 October 2026, Makaab has explained the circumstances behind Sibande’s decision to return to South Africa.
The agent's comments provide further insight into the move and the considerations involved in securing regular opportunities for the defender.
Although playing abroad can be an important step in a footballer's development, the decision must also make sense from a sporting perspective. Regular playing time, the coach's plans and the opportunity to continue developing are all important factors when evaluating a player's next move.
Sibande's return to Stellenbosch gives him an opportunity to continue his career in familiar surroundings while competing for a place in Gavin Hunt's team.
Stellenbosch is not an unfamiliar destination for the defender.
He previously developed at the club, progressing through its development structures before establishing himself in the senior team. During his first spell, he made 42 appearances across competitions and was part of the squad that won the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup.
He later moved to TS Galaxy in 2024, where he continued gaining experience before attracting interest from Petrojet.
His Egyptian transfer was officially confirmed in January 2026, making him one of the South African players to secure an opportunity in the North African league.
Sibande's return could provide Stellenbosch with additional options on the left side of the defence.
The versatile footballer can operate as a left-back and also contribute further forward when required. His previous experience at the club means he already understands its environment and expectations.
Stellenbosch have undergone significant squad changes ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, making competition for positions particularly important.
Hunt will want players capable of providing consistency, defensive discipline and attacking support. Sibande will therefore have to demonstrate that he can compete for a regular place rather than relying on his previous reputation at the club.
A Fresh Opportunity In South Africa
For Sibande, returning home does not necessarily represent the end of his international ambitions.
