Orlando Pirates have received a positive update on Oswin Appollis after the winger resumed training following an injury scare. However, head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has made it clear that the club will take a careful approach before allowing the attacker to return to competitive football.
The news comes at an important time for the Buccaneers, who are preparing for a demanding run of fixtures in domestic and continental competitions. One of their biggest upcoming challenges is the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs, scheduled for October 31.
Appollis suffered the injury scare during Pirates' 3-0 Betway Premiership win over TS Galaxy earlier this month. The winger was stretchered off the pitch, raising concerns among supporters about the seriousness of the problem. Before leaving the game, he had already helped his team by setting up Boitumelo Radiopane for the opening goal.
Following the incident, Ouaddou suggested that fatigue might have contributed to the problem rather than a serious injury. The decision to withdraw Appollis was reportedly reached after consultations involving the player, coaching staff and medical personnel.
His return to training has since provided encouragement for Pirates, particularly with several significant matches approaching. During the latest session, the technical team assessed his physical condition, focusing on whether he could sprint and carry out different movements without pain.
The early signs were promising, as Appollis reportedly indicated that he experienced no discomfort during the session. Nevertheless, Ouaddou has stressed the importance of managing his players carefully to avoid unnecessary risks during the season.
The coach reportedly compared his squad members to luxury sports cars, underlining the need for proper maintenance and careful handling to keep them in good condition.
