French football great Thierry Henry has praised South African football, naming former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Doctor Khumalo as the local player who most impressed him. His comments have been welcomed by many supporters, particularly those who remember Khumalo’s achievements with Chiefs and Bafana Bafana.
Henry discussed South Africa’s football history and its celebrated generation of players, including members of the national team that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. He referred to well-known figures such as Phil Masinga, Mark Fish and Lucas Radebe, but singled out Khumalo as the player who stood out to him.
The praise carries particular weight because of Henry’s own career. He played at the highest levels of European and international football with clubs including Arsenal and Barcelona, and represented France. His recognition of Khumalo has therefore become a talking point among South African fans, though it also reflects the midfielder’s long-standing reputation at home.
Khumalo is regarded as one of Kaizer Chiefs’ most influential former players. He was known for his close control, accurate passing, creativity and ability to read the game. Across club and international football, those qualities helped establish him as one of the country’s most admired midfielders.
He also played an important part in Bafana Bafana’s success at the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. South Africa won the tournament on home soil, defeating Tunisia 2-0 in the final at FNB Stadium. The victory remains a landmark in the country’s sporting history and helped bring national attention to a talented group of players.
Henry’s visit to South Africa included attending the Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium. The match is one of the country’s best-known football events, drawing large crowds and intense support for both clubs. Henry reportedly remarked on the sight of rival supporters sitting near one another, despite the strong competition between the teams.
His visit offered an opportunity to experience the atmosphere around the derby and engage with South African football culture. Still, it was his praise for Khumalo that captured much of the attention. For Chiefs supporters, the recognition is a reminder of the midfielder’s lasting influence and the place he holds in South African football.
