Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has revealed how former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry's childhood experiences inspired his coaching philosophy, particularly his determination to push players to constantly improve and strive for excellence.

Ouaddou shared the insight following Orlando Pirates' 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby. The Moroccan tactician attracted attention during the match because of his animated reactions on the touchline, which he explained were driven by his passion for winning and desire to get the best out of his players.

The Pirates coach believes managing a major club comes with significant responsibility, especially given the expectations and pressure associated with the Soweto giants. Having enjoyed a 17-year professional playing career before becoming a coach, Ouaddou understands the importance of maintaining high standards.

To explain his approach, he referred to a story from Thierry Henry's autobiography. Henry, who attended the Soweto Derby as a special guest, reportedly had a conversation with Ouaddou before the match.

Ouaddou recalled reading about Henry's childhood football experiences in Paris, where his father constantly challenged him to do better, even when he scored four or five goals in a single match.

Instead of receiving the praise he expected, the young Henry would be told that his performance was not good enough and that he needed to score even more goals.

According to Ouaddou, that mentality is something he wants to introduce at Orlando Pirates.

He explained that his intention is to encourage his footballers to raise their standards, work harder and never become satisfied with their achievements.

The Moroccan coach also emphasised that his demanding approach comes from a place of care, describing himself as both a coach and an older brother who wants his players to fulfil their potential.

Ouaddou believes that maintaining such a mentality will help Orlando Pirates continue competing at the highest level and pursue greater success.
