The decision to start Monnapule Saleng in Mamelodi Sundowns' last-16 Carling Knockout Cup match against Marumo Gallants was based on more than just the winger's performance, according to head coach Miguel Cardoso.

Sundowns' plans for the gifted attacker and what he needs to do to get a regular spot in the team have supporters curious about Cardoso's remarks.

The Portuguese tactician described the opportunity as a chance for Saleng to take stock of his situation, pinpoint problem areas, and show more consistency in his day-to-day work.

The club wanted the winger to know what to do differently in order to live up to the team's standards, Cardoso claims.

"That's a chance we gave Saleng to reflect on his thoughts, become self-aware, demonstrate consistency, train methodically at a good level, and be conscious of the things that needed to change," Cardoso articulated.

According to his comments, Sundowns aren't just looking at Saleng's inherent ability when evaluating his progress; they're also considering his demeanor, self-control, and dedication while training.

The Decision-Making Process of Cardoso

Sundowns spots are still up for grabs, so players need to prove themselves time and time again and live up to the standards set by the technical staff.

In the match against Marumo Gallants, Saleng got a chance to demonstrate his worth and how he could aid the team's offensive goals.

Based on what Cardoso said, it sounds like the coaching staff wants the winger to own his growth and fix his weaknesses. If he wants to cement his place on the squad, he'll need to be consistent and tactically disciplined, even though his individual ability is still important.

Where Does Saleng Go From Here?

This chance might be a big boost for Saleng's ambitions to get a bigger role at Sundowns. But he can't expect consistent playing time from Cardoso.

It appears that Saleng will need to keep up his efforts to persuade the technical team that he is worthy of more opportunities, given the coach's focus on continuous training and improvement.

If the winger can channel the coach's self-assurance into good performances, Sundowns fans will be watching closely.

Saleng must prove to Cardoso that he can fulfilll his demands and be a dependable attacking option as the Brazilians continue to compete in domestic competitions.

If he wants to make the most of this chance and cement his place on the team, we may see how he plays in the upcoming matches.
