Mamelodi Sundowns could be preparing for a possible squad reshuffle when the January transfer window opens, with several fringe players potentially being sent out on loan following the club's disappointing elimination from the CAF Champions League.
The Brazilians suffered a shock exit after failing to overcome Angolan side Wiliete SC in their continental campaign. Sundowns had secured a goalless draw in the first leg in Angola, raising expectations that they would comfortably complete the job in front of their home supporters. However, they were held to a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld, resulting in elimination on the away-goals rule.
Tashreeq Matthews gave Sundowns an early advantage in the 11th minute, but Angolan striker Mabululu equalised shortly after the restart. Despite creating opportunities to restore their lead, Miguel Cardoso's men were unable to find another goal.
The disappointing result has reportedly raised questions about the club's squad management, particularly the number of players competing for limited opportunities at Chloorkop.
According to a former Sundowns defender cited in the report, the club could consider sending some fringe players out on loan in January. Such arrangements would allow footballers struggling for regular game time to gain valuable experience at other clubs rather than spending extended periods on the sidelines.
However, no mass departure has been confirmed, and Sundowns have not officially identified any players who could be made available.
For Cardoso, the priority will now be restoring confidence within the dressing room and keeping the squad focused on domestic competitions. Sundowns remain determined to challenge for the Betway Premiership title and other domestic honours despite their continental disappointment.
A January loan reshuffle could therefore benefit both the club and players seeking opportunities elsewhere. Whether Sundowns opt for a few temporary departures or a bigger squad adjustment remains to be seen.
