Beto Bianchi Praises Wiliete SC Defence After Historic Elimination of Mamelodi Sundowns
After his Angolan team, Wiliete SC, made history by eliminating Mamelodi Sundowns from the CAF Champions League and advancing to the group stage, head coach Beto Bianchi lauded his players for their disciplined defensive effort.
Wiliete advanced to the next round based on the away-goals rule after Friday night's 1-1 tie with Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld. The first leg took place in Lubango and concluded in a scoreless stalemate. The outcome was devastating for the South African powerhouses, who were considered heavy favourites going into the match.
Tashreeq Matthews gave Sundowns the lead in the 11th minute, kicking off a bright first half. Nevertheless, Wiliete got back on track not long after halftime when Cristóvão "Mabululu" Paciência scored an equaliser in the 48th minute after taking advantage of a defensive blunder made by Cassius Mailula.
Sundowns were unable to find the back of the net despite controlling the majority of possession and having 18 shots to Wiliete's six. The away team's defence was solid and they kept their opponents guessing right up to the last whistle.
Bianchi was overjoyed with his team's effort, saying that they were prepared to face an experienced opponent like Sundowns with the defensive duties that come with the job. Their adherence to the game plan, resilience in the face of persistent pressure, and finishing chances were all lauded by him.
The coach emphasised the importance of Wiliete's home victory against Sundowns, saying that it was a major step toward the team's goals for the season.
As a result of losing in the CAF Champions League for the first time in eleven years, Sundowns are now facing tough issues. Tlhopie Motsepe, the chairman, has voiced his displeasure and is supposedly counting on coach Miguel Cardoso to win the remaining tournaments, including the CAF Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
Wiliete, on the other hand, views the historic qualifying as a huge victory, commending Sundowns' disciplined play that put a stop to their continental aspirations before to the group stage.
