Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has expressed his disappointment after his team failed to take advantage of their opportunities, insisting that the Glamour Boys should have put the game beyond Orlando Pirates' reach in the first half.
Da Cruz believes Chiefs had enough opportunities to score two or three goals before the break and effectively kill the contest. However, their inability to convert those chances allowed Pirates to remain in the game and eventually put pressure on Amakhosi.
Reflecting on the match, the Chiefs coach also questioned some of the match officials' decisions, suggesting that Pirates' goal should have been ruled out for offside. He further indicated that he felt there could have been a red-card decision during the encounter.
According to Da Cruz, scoring two or three goals in the opening half would have changed the entire complexion of the match and given Chiefs greater control.
The French tactician also pointed to his team's lack of experience, particularly during the final 20 minutes of the second half, when younger players struggled to manage the pressure.
He explained that the inexperienced players failed to create enough attacking opportunities while also allowing their opponents opportunities to threaten their goal.
Da Cruz's comments highlight the challenges facing Chiefs as they continue integrating younger players into the senior squad. While the coach believes the youngsters have potential, he acknowledged that experience remains an important factor when dealing with high-pressure matches.
His assessment also raises questions about Chiefs' ability to turn promising performances into victories, particularly against their biggest rivals.
For Amakhosi, converting early chances and maintaining concentration until the final whistle will remain crucial as they look to improve their results in upcoming fixtures.
