ProSport International CEO Mike Makaab has broken his silence on Manqoba Mngqithi’s sudden departure from Young Africans. The agent spoke out after the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach left the Tanzanian club in surprising fashion. His comments also touched on the fresh talk linking Mngqithi with Kaizer Chiefs.
Yanga parted ways with the 55-year-old on Saturday, 24 October. The decision came hours after a goalless draw against TRA United. That result left the defending champions five points behind rivals Simba SC in the Tanzanian Premier League. A 2-1 loss to Steve Barker’s side in the Kariakoo Derby the previous week had already put pressure on the technical team.
Mngqithi’s three-month spell produced strong numbers. He won 10 of 13 matches, drew two and lost only once. His side scored freely and conceded few goals. He lifted the Community Shield with a win over Simba in August and guided Yanga into the CAF Champions League group stages. Despite those achievements, the club ended his two-year contract early. Conditioning coach Chyna Mokaila also left.
The exit has put Mngqithi back on the market. South African clubs have taken notice, especially Kaizer Chiefs. Amakhosi previously showed interest in the coach before he moved to Tanzania in July. He has said those talks were real but never reached a formal agreement. Chiefs currently have Fernando da Cruz in charge, yet the Frenchman’s side has faced early pressure after an exit from the CAF Confederation Cup.
Makaab, who has long represented Mngqithi, addressed both the Yanga situation and the renewed Chiefs links. He has previously made clear that any serious approach must come directly from a club. He has also said Mngqithi looks for a clear project where he can implement his ideas. With the coach now free, the agent’s latest comments confirm that doors remain open while respect is shown for recent events.
Mngqithi returns to South Africa with a solid coaching record at Sundowns, Golden Arrows and now Yanga. His next move will be watched closely in the Premier Soccer League. For now, Makaab’s intervention has added clarity to a story that has moved quickly since last weekend.
