Orlando Pirates have reportedly suffered an injury setback, with promising young striker Will Henson expected to spend approximately six weeks on the sidelines after sustaining a thigh injury while representing South Africa at the COSAFA Cup Under-20 tournament.
The 18-year-old forward picked up the injury while featuring for the South African Under-20 national team, Amajita. The setback is an unfortunate development for the youngster, who has been working hard to establish himself as one of the most promising attacking talents within the Buccaneers' development structures.
According to reports, Henson had been struggling with the thigh problem for approximately two months before his condition worsened during the COSAFA Cup matches. Following a medical assessment, he is now expected to undergo rehabilitation for around six weeks before returning to competitive action.
Henson's injury comes at a difficult time in his development, particularly given the progress he has made through his performances at youth level. The talented striker previously finished as the leading goalscorer in the Gauteng Development League, earning him the nickname "Anytime Goalscorer" because of his consistent ability to find the back of the net.
His goalscoring record has raised expectations about his future at Orlando Pirates, with supporters hopeful that he could eventually earn an opportunity to represent the senior team.
The injury is also expected to affect the Pirates reserve side competing in the DStv Diski Challenge, where Henson's attacking contributions could be missed during his absence. His ability to convert scoring opportunities has made him an important prospect for the club's long-term plans.
However, the priority will be ensuring that the teenager recovers completely before returning to action. Rushing his comeback could aggravate the injury and potentially prolong his recovery.
Pirates will hope Henson responds positively to treatment and resumes training when medically cleared. At just 18, he still has considerable time to develop his abilities and pursue his ambition of breaking into the first team.
