Faiz Abrahams grateful for Kaizer Chiefs chance after uncertain period

A few months ago, Faiz Abrahams’ football future looked uncertain. The 21-year-old from Bishop Lavis on the Cape Flats had returned early from a loan spell at Hapoel Kfar Saba in Israel and faced questions about his next move. Today he is living a dream he once thought was out of reach as he settles into life at one of South Africa’s biggest clubs, Kaizer Chiefs.

Abrahams joined Amakhosi in August on a season-long loan from Stellenbosch FC, with an option for the Glamour Boys to make the deal permanent. He has already shown why the club took a chance on him. The left-footed winger has made four appearances and caught the eye with his ability to beat defenders and deliver quality crosses. He announced himself properly in September with a stunning free-kick that helped secure a 3-2 Betway Premiership win over Siwelele FC at Dobsonville Stadium.

Speaking exclusively to KickOff, Abrahams said he is determined to make the most of his chance. “In fact, I’m working harder than ever because I want to cement a regular spot in the first team,” he said. “I’ve fitted in well and I have to credit the coaching staff and my teammates because they are a great bunch. I just have to continue giving good performances. I’m just grateful for the opportunity and all praise to God for it.”

The Cape Town product, who came through the ranks at Cape Town Spurs before joining Stellenbosch, already has experience of big stages. He was part of the Amajita side that won the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in 2025. His time in Israel produced three goals and three assists in 11 games, but the move did not work out as hoped and he returned home early.

Now at Naturena, Abrahams faces a busy period. Chiefs are set to play Red Arrows in the return leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round match, face TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout, and then meet arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on 31 October. For the young winger, these fixtures offer the perfect stage to show he belongs at one of the country’s biggest clubs.
