Red Arrows head coach Chisi Mbewe has praised his players for eliminating Kaizer Chiefs from the CAF Confederation Cup, describing the achievement as a major source of motivation for the Zambian club ahead of its maiden appearance in the competition’s group stage.
Mbewe said defeating a club with the history and reputation of Chiefs carried special significance, particularly because the Soweto giants have considerable experience in South African and continental football.
“Chiefs is not a small team, it’s a big team in the PSL and I think beating them brings a lot of confidence,” Mbewe said after the decisive encounter.
Red Arrows secured qualification after winning a penalty shootout in Durban on Friday, October 23, 2026. The second leg ended 1-0 in favour of Chiefs, leaving the aggregate score level at 1-1 after the Zambian side had won the first leg by the same margin.
Bradley Cross scored for Chiefs in the return match, but the South African club failed to find another goal before the final whistle. Red Arrows subsequently prevailed 3-2 in the shootout to book their place in the group stage.
Reflecting on the match, Mbewe highlighted the mental strength required to withstand pressure from Chiefs, especially in front of a crowd at Moses Mabhida Stadium. He explained that his players had prepared for an intense contest and needed to remain disciplined when their opponents pushed forward.
The coach also praised his squad for staying organised after conceding, noting that the team followed instructions during the second half and defended resolutely to keep the tie alive.
Mbewe dedicated the achievement to Zambia’s population, describing the qualification as a significant moment for the club and the country. Red Arrows, owned by the Zambia Air Force, will now prepare for the challenge of competing against established sides in the group stage.
He stressed that the team must continue improving and make the most of its home advantage in Ndola if it hopes to progress further in the tournament.
