Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed that Monnapule Saleng is back in the squad for their Carling Knockout last-16 match against Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld.

The 28-year-old right winger from Bloemhof has been away from the first-team picture for most of the season. Earlier, coach Miguel Cardoso said Saleng had breached club rules by failing to report for some camps, including important trips. As a result, he trained on his own at Chloorkop for a while to protect team harmony.

In recent weeks, things have improved. Cardoso explained that the club, from the chairman to the captains, decided to give Saleng another chance to move forward. The Portuguese coach said the player has been training consistently and showing the right attitude and respect. “We are happy that he is showing consistency at training,” Cardoso said. He added that Saleng’s time on the pitch will come, although there is plenty of competition for places up front this season.

Saleng joined the Brazilians from Orlando Pirates in January 2026 after a strong career at the Buccaneers, where he won individual awards. His start at Sundowns has been tough, with very few appearances so far. His agent has previously spoken about deeper personal challenges the player has faced, and the club has shown support as he works his way back.

This return is timely. Sundowns want to respond well after their unexpected CAF Champions League exit and keep their strong domestic form going after lifting the MTN8. Gallants, who eliminated them from the same competition last season, are struggling at the bottom of the league table and have yet to win a game this campaign. They will look for another cup shock, but Masandawana remain favourites at home.

Fans will welcome seeing Saleng among the options again. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, his skill and experience add quality to the attack. For the player, it is a fresh opportunity to prove himself and contribute as Sundowns chase more silverware. The club has made it clear they want the best for him, and his inclusion shows the door is open if he continues on the right path.
