Da Cruz Reveals Why Mayo And Ighodaro Are Not Regular Chiefs Starters

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has explained why strikers Khanyisa Mayo and Etiosa Ighodaro have not become reliable options for the team's offense just yet, pointing to a number of challenges that the two players face.Ighodaro has had enough time to learn Da Cruz's desired tactical approach for his men, while Mayo is still working to get in shape for demanding games.Given the Chiefs' current offensive depth chart, the coach's comments help explain why the two attackers haven't gotten the playing time that some fans may have hoped for.Mayo arrived at Naturena with a stellar reputation, thanks to his extensive footballing career in South Africa.

But Da Cruz thinks the ex-Cape Town City forward needs to get in shape before he can be relied on in games that require sustained effort.Mayo was nearly ready, but Da Cruz said he hadn't reached the required physical level, so he didn't use him in the most recent high-intensity match. He explained that while Mayo is nearby and a talented player, he wasn't physically ready for this type of game. He explained that Mayo needs to get into the game and understand the game model in order to help Ighodaro.

For Ighodaro, things are different. Instead of focusing solely on physical preparation, the coach would like the new striker to understand the team's playing philosophy and his role within the system. After the Nigerian forward has gotten a feel for the team's style of play, Da Cruz believes he could provide another threat up front.LAgain citing the Orlando Pirates, the coach drove home the point that the Chiefs have a tough time physically competing with teams that have strong bench units. He might provide an alternate answer. When facing formidable opponents like the Pirates, we must be in peak physical condition.

We must be ready because, as we have seen in the previous twenty minutes, they are fierce and always bring in fresh, brilliant talent. In his words, the Chiefs are trying to bolster their offensive depth by placing an emphasis on tactical acumen and physical fitness.Mayo is currently focused on getting fit for a match, while Ighodaro needs to continue understanding the team's game plan. Da Cruz will be keeping his fingers crossed that Amakhosi will have more options up front as the season progresses from the two attackers.
