SUNDOWNS FACE PSL FIXTURE TALKS AFTER SHOCK CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE EXIT
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 28 OCTOBER 2026 — Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to continue discussions with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) over their outstanding domestic fixtures for the remainder of the year, despite suffering a major setback in their continental campaign.
The Tshwane giants will not participate in the CAF Champions League group stages this season after being eliminated by Angola’s Wiliete SC in the second preliminary round. However, their early exit from Africa’s premier club competition does not mean their busy domestic schedule will immediately ease.
According to the latest report, Sundowns still have engagements with the PSL regarding some of their pending fixtures as the league works through the demands of the 2026/27 campaign.
Sundowns turn attention back to domestic football
The Brazilians entered the season with ambitions of competing for major honours both at home and on the continent. Their elimination from the Champions League has dealt a significant blow to those aspirations, particularly given their strong record in the competition over recent years.
Sundowns were held to a goalless draw by Wiliete in Angola before playing to a 1-1 draw in the return leg at Loftus Versfeld. The result allowed the Angolan side to advance on the away-goals rule, ending Sundowns’ hopes of reaching the group stages.
The disappointment has forced the Pretoria-based club to redirect its attention towards domestic competitions, where important league points and cup opportunities remain available.
Despite the continental setback, Sundowns still have several demanding assignments to navigate before the end of December.
PSL fixture discussions remain important
The scheduling discussions are expected to be important as Sundowns seek clarity on their remaining commitments.
The club's calendar has already been affected by participation in multiple competitions, including the MTN8, the Betway Premiership and the CAF Champions League qualifying rounds.
Although their African campaign has ended earlier than anticipated, the PSL must still consider the wider league calendar when determining dates for outstanding domestic matches.
Fixture congestion can create challenges for clubs, particularly when matches must be arranged around cup competitions, broadcast requirements and other scheduling considerations.
For Sundowns, securing clarity over the remaining fixtures will help the technical team plan training sessions, manage player workloads and prepare for a demanding end to the year.
