Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has praised Evidence Makgopa for making the most of his opportunity after the striker delivered an impressive performance in their 4-0 victory over Africa Stars in the CAF Champions League.
Makgopa scored twice and provided an assist as the Buccaneers defeated the Namibian side in the second leg of their second-round preliminary tie at Orlando Stadium on Friday. The victory secured a 5-0 aggregate win and confirmed Pirates’ place in the Champions League group stage for the second time in three campaigns.
The 26-year-old forward missed most of Pirates’ opening matches this season because of injury. However, he showed his quality when given the chance, leaving Ouaddou pleased with his contribution and giving the coach more options ahead of the group stage.
Ouaddou explained that Makgopa had not played regularly since last season, making his performance even more encouraging. The coach was impressed by the striker’s movement, his ability to find space and the way he helped the team build attacks.
He also highlighted the importance of Makgopa improving his ability to hold up the ball between the lines. According to Ouaddou, the striker followed his instructions and allowed his teammates to make runs and receive the ball in dangerous positions.
The Pirates coach also welcomed the fact that several forwards are contributing goals. He mentioned Boitumelo Radiopane, Yanela Mbuthuma, Sebastian Pedersen and Sifiso Luthuli among the attacking options available to him.
Having several players capable of scoring will be important as Pirates prepare for the demands of the CAF Champions League group stage. Ouaddou believes the depth in his squad will allow him to rotate players and give more footballers opportunities to prove themselves.
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has expressed confidence in his team’s chances of winning the CAF Champions League following Mamelodi Sundowns’ elimination from the competition.
Ouaddou said Sundowns’ exit had created an opportunity for Pirates to pursue continental glory. He added that the Buccaneers are eager to win the competition and add a second CAF Champions League star to their jersey, believing the team now has a better chance of achieving that goal this season.
Pirates will now look to carry their strong performance against Africa Stars into the group stage as they aim to challenge for the continental title. Makgopa’s return to form could prove valuable as the Soweto giants seek success in Africa and domestic competitions.
