SAFA Referees Chief Breaks Silence On Referee Luxolo Badi’s Pirates’ Scandal: The Truth Revealed

South African football referee Luxolo Badi has found himself at the centre of controversy after screenshots of alleged previous social media posts suggesting his support for Orlando Pirates began circulating online, raising questions about neutrality and impartiality among match officials.

The allegations have sparked heated reactions among football supporters, particularly those of Kaizer Chiefs, given the fierce rivalry between the two Soweto giants. Some supporters have questioned whether a referee who allegedly supports one of the country's biggest clubs can remain completely neutral when officiating matches involving rival teams.

The situation has also attracted attention towards the South African Football Association (SAFA), with supporters expecting the organisation to provide clarity on the matter and explain whether the allegations have been investigated.

SAFA head of referees Abdul Ebrahim has since addressed the broader concerns surrounding refereeing standards and public criticism of match officials. Ebrahim expressed concern about the limited understanding of the Laws of the Game among football supporters, arguing that better education is necessary to help people understand how referees arrive at certain decisions.

He also questioned the manner in which television football programmes analyse controversial refereeing incidents, suggesting that broadcasters should dedicate more attention to explaining the actual rules rather than simply criticising officials.

However, his comments have not completely addressed the specific concerns surrounding Badi and the screenshots circulating on social media.

Importantly, the authenticity of the screenshots has not been independently established, and there is currently no confirmed evidence that Badi has allowed any alleged personal football preferences to influence his professional decisions.

The controversy comes amid growing scrutiny of refereeing in the Betway Premiership, where several disputed decisions have generated frustration among supporters.

For SAFA, maintaining public confidence in match officials remains crucial. Referees are expected to demonstrate professionalism, fairness and neutrality regardless of their personal football interests.

Supporters will now be hoping for greater transparency and clarification from the association as the debate surrounding Badi continues to attract attention across South African football.
