“I Went to Sundowns to Milk Them for Money” – Mame Niang Reveals Why He Missed Pirates Move

Mame Niang Reveals Why He Chose Mamelodi Sundowns Over Orlando Pirates

Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Mame Niang has opened up about his decision to join the Tshwane giants instead of Orlando Pirates, revealing that financial considerations played a significant role in determining his next career move.

Niang’s revelation has attracted attention among South African football supporters, particularly Orlando Pirates fans, after he disclosed that he had initially hoped to represent the Soweto-based club before Sundowns presented a more attractive offer.

According to the former forward, Pirates had shown interest in securing his services, while Kaizer Chiefs were also reportedly associated with the pursuit. However, Sundowns ultimately won the race after offering a financial package that convinced him to move to Chloorkop.

Niang did not hide his intentions when explaining the circumstances surrounding his decision, making it clear that financial rewards were a major priority at that stage of his career.

"I went to Sundowns to milk them for money," Niang claimed, offering a candid explanation of his motivation for choosing the club over its rivals.

The former striker also revealed that former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane played a role in the discussions surrounding his move. According to Niang, Mosimane questioned him about whether he intended to join Pirates after learning that the Buccaneers had approached him.

Niang said Sundowns subsequently asked him to disclose the offer he had received from Pirates. The Brazilians then reportedly improved the financial terms, eventually persuading him to sign for the club.

The striker also indicated that regular playing time was not his primary concern when making the decision, suggesting that his experience in professional football influenced his priorities.

His comments have reignited discussions about the financial competition between Sundowns, Pirates and Chiefs, three of South Africa’s biggest football clubs.

While supporters often expect players to prioritise club loyalty, playing opportunities and the prospect of winning trophies, Niang’s admission highlights the important role financial negotiations can play in professional football.

For Pirates supporters, his revelation offers an intriguing glimpse into a transfer that could have taken a different direction. Meanwhile, Sundowns fans may view his comments as an honest account of how the club secured his services.
