Angolan club Wiliete SC have achieved a historic milestone by eliminating Mamelodi Sundowns from the CAF Champions League and securing a place in the group stage for the first time in their history. Head coach Beto Bianchi praised his players for their determination, defensive organisation and ability to withstand pressure from one of Africa’s most established clubs.
Wiliete confirmed their qualification after holding Sundowns to a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Friday night. With the first leg in Lubango ending goalless, the Angolan side advanced on the away-goals rule after the aggregate score finished 1-1.
Sundowns entered the return fixture as favourites, hoping to continue their pursuit of continental glory. However, Wiliete produced a disciplined performance that frustrated the South African giants and ultimately secured their passage into the next round.
The Brazilians made an encouraging start when Tashreeq Matthews scored in the 11th minute, giving the home supporters hope that their team would successfully overcome the challenge. The early breakthrough appeared to place Sundowns in a favourable position to progress.
However, Wiliete responded shortly after the restart. Cristóvão Paciência, widely known as Mabululu, restored parity in the 48th minute after capitalising on a defensive error involving Cassius Mailula. His goal shifted the balance of the contest and forced Sundowns to search for another breakthrough.
Speaking after the encounter, Bianchi expressed pride in his players for delivering such an important result against formidable opposition. He recognised the challenge of facing Sundowns on their home ground but praised his team's commitment to the plan.
“I want to congratulate my players. It’s not every day you beat Mamelodi on their home turf,” Bianchi said.
The coach also acknowledged the number of chances created by the hosts but emphasised that taking advantage of opportunities ultimately determines football matches.
“They had many opportunities, goal-scoring opportunities, but this is football. We just take the one shot we did and we are qualified now, that’s the most important thing for us,” he added.
Match statistics reflected Sundowns' attacking dominance, with the Pretoria-based outfit registering 18 shots compared with Wiliete's six. Despite creating several opportunities, the hosts failed to score the additional goal required to secure qualification.
For Sundowns, the elimination represents a significant disappointment, bringing their continental campaign to an unexpected end before the group stage.
Wiliete, meanwhile, can celebrate a breakthrough achievement that places them among the contenders in Africa's leading club competition. Their success demonstrates how tactical discipline, determination and clinical finishing can overcome reputation and experience.
Bianchi and his players will now prepare for the challenge of competing against some of the continent's strongest teams as they look to extend their remarkable journey.
