Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has warned his players against complacency as they prepare to face Angolan side Williete SC in the second leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie on Friday.
The Brazilians are looking to secure their place in the group stages as they continue their defence of the continental title. Sundowns head into the return fixture with a positive result, but Cardoso believes there is still work to be done before they can celebrate qualification.
The Portuguese coach pointed to Sundowns' previous elimination by Petro de Luanda as a reminder of the challenges they have faced against Angolan opposition. He also highlighted Williete's strong position in their domestic league and their defensive record as reasons why his team must approach the match with the right attitude.
Cardoso explained that every competition has its own importance, although the Champions League comes with different demands compared to domestic competitions. He believes his players must treat the match seriously and avoid assuming that qualification is already guaranteed.
The Sundowns coach also stressed the importance of choosing the right starting line-up and identifying the players who can help the team finish the tie. He insisted that nothing comes easily in the Champions League and that his side must fight for a place in the group stages.
Defender Thapelo Morena also highlighted the importance of Friday's encounter. He admitted that things did not go as planned in Angola but said the team must focus on what happens in the second leg rather than dwelling on the previous performance.
Sundowns will be determined to deliver a strong performance and continue their journey towards retaining the African title they won last season.
Meanwhile, the club has also been linked to a separate financial dispute involving former forward Lucas Ribeiro.
Lucas Ribeiro has reportedly asked Mamelodi Sundowns for 24 months to pay the R66 million demanded by the club, saying he is currently unable to raise the full amount. FIFA reportedly gave the Brazilian forward 45 days to make the payment, with only 24 days remaining. Ribeiro is said to have requested more time, but Sundowns have reportedly rejected his proposal. The situation could have serious consequences for the player, although any potential FIFA ban from professional football has not been officially confirmed.
The reported dispute adds another development involving the club, although it remains separate from Sundowns' preparations for their Champions League match. Cardoso and his players will be focused on overcoming Williete and securing their place in the next stage of the competition.
