Olwethu Makhanya, a young defender for the Bafana Bafana national team, recently spoke about his first goal for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership. However, he felt he couldn't completely savour the moment because his team didn't manage to secure all three points.
Late on Wednesday nite, Rangers were able to salvage a 2-2 draw against Hearts thanks to a goal from Makhanya. Even though the outcome was disheartening for the Rangers players, his goal was crucial in keeping their team from losing.
The South African defender felt a sense of accomplishment after he scored the club's first goal. Having said that, Makhanya made it plain that he cared more about the team's overall success than his own individual accomplishments.
Makhanya expressed his unhappiness with the outcome to Rangers TV after the game, saying that he did not feel like he had scored.
"To be honest, I still don't think I scored a goal," Makhanya stated.
Now that I have my first, I can't help but feel like there will be more in the future. That leaves me with no good takeaway from the game.
After finally scoring for Rangers, the defender was overjoyed and thinks more goals are on the horizon. He was forthright, though, in his assessment of the team's performance, acknowledging that they fell short of expectations.
As they get ready for their next match, Makhanya told the Rangers players to put the disappointing loss in the past because the team is capable of far greater performances.
"It was a really disappointing performance tonight [Wednesday]. We are a better team than what we showed today," he elaborated.
"We just have to keep moving forward and concentrating on the next game; it's just one of those."
The South African defender added that it would be difficult to play Hearts away from home. He went on to say that Rangers were bracing for a tough match and felt they needed to play better to win.
They are a tough opponent to play, particularly at home, so we knew it would be tough. According to him, all we needed to do was be more convincing.
Despite the letdown, Makhanya reached a significant personal milestone with his first goal for the Rangers. As he becomes a permanent fixture at the Scottish club, the defender will be looking to build upon this success and keep getting better.
Vuyo Mere, a former defender for Platinum Stars and Mamelodi Sundowns, has opted to pursue a career in legal consulting instead. Consumer Credit Law (CCL) has hired the 42-year-old, who has multiple PSL records, as a junior consultant. After leaving professional football in 2024, Mere tried coaching with TS Galaxy for a while before deciding to go in a another direction. Together with consumer credit specialists, he now assists South Africans in safeguarding their houses, cars, and credit histories. It's inspiring to see how Mere has found success in a new endeavour since retiring from football.
Footballers can find success in many other fields after retiring, as seen by Mere's career move. Makhanya is just getting his professional football career off the ground, while Mere is embarking on a fresh chapter in her life away from football.
Helping Rangers get back on track is Makhanya's first priority. The defender will be happy with his first goal, but he knows that the team values steady play and winning games.
