Former Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has reacted to the tragic incident involving FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono and Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, insisting that the challenge should not automatically be interpreted as a deliberate attempt to cause harm.
Kahn described the incident as heartbreaking, saying that nobody wants to witness such a tragedy on a football pitch. However, drawing from his own experience as a goalkeeper, he argued that Owono may have acted instinctively while attempting to reach the ball.
According to Kahn, goalkeepers sometimes raise their knees for protection when coming off their goal line to challenge for aerial balls. Although such movements can result in dangerous collisions, he stressed that this does not necessarily prove that a player intended to injure an opponent.
He also criticised people on social media who have labelled Owono a murderer, warning against making serious accusations without knowing what was going through the goalkeeper's mind.
Kahn further addressed criticism surrounding Owono's actions after the collision, explaining that the goalkeeper reportedly returned to check on De Miguel after realising how serious the situation had become.
While acknowledging that the challenge was terrible and deserved scrutiny, Kahn maintained that there is a clear difference between a dangerous football challenge and deliberately intending to take someone's life.
He concluded by extending his heartfelt condolences to De Miguel's family, teammates and everyone at Tenerife, describing the incident as a devastating moment for football.
