FC Twente defeated Lincoln Red Imps F.C. 4-1 on Thursday in the UEFA Conference League league stage. Played at the Europa Point Stadium in Gibraltar, the victory kept John van den Brom's side completely flawless with two wins from two games in Europe.
The victory gave Twente 6 points from their first two Conference League league-phase matches. They had opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Swiss side FC Thun a week earlier, putting them in a strong position early in the competition.
Lincoln Red Imps are the most successful club in Gibraltar, having dominated the domestic league for extended periods. They have also previously reached the group stage of the Europa Conference League in the 2021-22 season.
Twente broke the deadlock in the 19th minute. Thomas van den Belt opened the scoring with a close-range finish following a slick pass from Wout Weghorst.
Weghorst doubled the lead himself five minutes later, a goal that required a brief VAR confirmation before being fully awarded. The ball had deflected to Weghorst, who was initially given offside after finishing the chance.
Lincoln Red Imps bit back just before halftime. The 41-year-old veteran Nano fired a free kick that deflected off Ruud Nijstad in the Twente wall, completely wrong-footing goalkeeper Joël Drommel.
Van den Belt restored Twente’s two-goal cushion in the 57th minute, linking up beautifully with Bart van Rooij and Daan Rots to score his second of the night.
The fourth Twente goal should have come in the 81st minute when Sondre Orjasaeter missed an unchallenged volley from point-blank range, but the goal eventually came in the final seconds of the match.
Late substitute Daouda Weidmann capped off the night in stoppage time, drilling home the final goal with an impressive effort from outside the penalty area right before the referee blew the whistle.
Twente will return to European action on November 5, when they host Cypriot side Pafos. They will then face Freiburg away before continuing their Conference League campaign against Aarhus and Kairat Almaty.
