MICHAEL Carrick has indicated he plans to stay at the helm of Manchester United for the Champions League encounter with Roma on Tuesday night, despite a 2-0 loss against Chelsea that extended his team’s winless streak to nine matches.
Following a disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth last weekend, during which many speculated he might be dismissed, Carrick received a temporary reprieve from United’s management.
The team showed marked improvement in the first half at Stamford Bridge, but their inability to capitalize on several significant opportunities proved costly.
Morgan Rogers maneuvered through United’s defense to net the opening goal shortly after the break.
Lisandro Martinez received two rapid yellow cards, leading to a penalty that was successfully converted by Cole Palmer, dashing any hopes of a United comeback.
“Yes,” Carrick replied to TNT Sports when asked if he anticipated remaining in charge for the upcoming match against Roma.
“We need to move forward. We must build on the aspects that worked for us today, fostering a sense of belief and confidence from the positives, especially during the first half.”
United’s current winless streak, their longest in 38 years, places them just one point above the Premier League relegation zone, vulnerable to dropping into the bottom three by the weekend’s conclusion.
Carrick remarked: “The contrast between our performance in the first half and the second could hardly be greater.”
“The way they played and the quality we demonstrated in the first half provides us with a source of encouragement. We have to embrace that.”
Saturday’s Premier League results
