Canoeing:
World marathon Championships Gualeguaychu, October 22-25, 2026:
Keegan Vogt took part in the Junior K1 short course and Junior K1 long course events as well as the Senior K2 event, which took place in Gualeguaychu, Argentina over four days.

Keegan had a dominant performance in the short course becoming a junior world champion paddling away from the group. In the long course he had another impressive performance with an end sprint against Italy as he claimed a silver medal.

The last battle for the weekend was in the senior long course with Hamish Lovemore. They raced a very gutsy race with Keegan showing his pedigree, just falling off the main group at the second to last portage, but claiming 10th overall.

Water Polo:
Maritzburg College enjoyed several positive results over the weekend, with eight teams taking on Kearsney and the 1st team competing in the Stayers Inspired Cup.

Against Kearsney, College’s 2nd team secured a hard-fought 8-6 victory, while the U14A and U14C teams recorded convincing 5-2 and 6-2 wins respectively. The U15C team shared the honours in a closely contested 5-5 draw. The 3rd team narrowly lost 5-7, while the 4th team went down 8-15.

The U15B and U14B teams suffered 2-10 and 6-10 defeats respectively. College finished the fixture programme with three wins, one draw and four losses.

At the Stayers Inspired Cup, the 1st team opened with an emphatic 26-1 victory over Crawford Lonehill before losing 8-13 to Wynberg. A 12-5 win over St David’s 2nd team followed, setting up a quarter-final against St Alban’s, where College went down 7-10.

The boys responded strongly, beating St Stithians 2nd team 15-3 before securing a 10-5 victory over Hudson Park in the fifth-place playoff. College finished fifth, recording four wins from six matches and ending the tournament with two positive performances.

Congratulations to Joe Makepeace on reaching the significant milestone of 100 caps. His selection for the tournament team added further recognition to a memorable weekend and was a proud achievement for both Joe and College water polo.

Cricket:
Maritzburg College’s 1st XI produced a determined performance to secure a hard-fought two-wicket victory over Kearsney College on the AH Smith Oval on Saturday.

College captain Reece Willson’s unfortunate run with the toss continued, as he lost yet another one. However, it proved a blessing in disguise as College’s disciplined bowling attack made an immediate impact. Greg Hosking and Willson struck early to reduce Kearsney to four for two, placing the hosts under pressure from the outset.

Kearsney fought back through a partnership that helped them recover to 45 for three, but College continued to chip away at the batting line-up, preventing the hosts from establishing a significant foothold in the innings.

Willson led the attack superbly, claiming four for 30 from eight overs, while Matt Bisset two for 19 and Luke Venter two for 21 provided excellent support. Hosking and Kyle De Bruyn also contributed a wicket apiece.

Chasing 114 for victory, College endured a disastrous start as Kearsney’s bowlers took advantage of the conditions to reduce the visitors to 13 for four inside the first nine overs. With half the side almost back in the pavilion before the innings had gathered momentum, the match was firmly in the balance.

However, Willson and Luan van der Merwe responded with a match-defining fifth-wicket partnership. Willson counterattacked positively, striking seven boundaries in his 35 off 47 deliveries, while van der Merwe provided composure and stability at the other end. Their 71-run partnership lifted College from 13 for 4 to 84 for five.

Willson’s dismissal, followed shortly by that of James Pembridge. Kearsney refused to surrender, continuing to apply pressure as College lost further wickets in the closing stages.

Van der Merwe, however, remained composed throughout. His unbeaten 43 off 81 deliveries was an excellent display of patience, resilience and game awareness. Recognising the importance of remaining at the crease, he resisted the temptation to take unnecessary risks and continued to guide College towards the target.

The dismissals of Riley Palmer and Bisset left College needing just two runs with only two wickets in hand. With the outcome still uncertain, van der Merwe held his nerve, with Venter alongside him as College reached 114 for eight in 34.4 overs to secure a memorable two-wicket victory.

Scores in brief:
Kearsney 113 all out College 114 for 8
Willson 4 for 30 Van der Merwe 43*
Bisset 2 for 19 Willson 35
Venter 2 for 21
College won by 2 wickets
