Chelsea hosted Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge in a Matchday 8 fixture of the Premier League 2026-27 on Saturday, October 24, 2026. A second-half own goal from Mike Penders and a late goal from Mathys Tel secured a 2-0 win for Spurs.
The first half featured few opportunities, with both goalkeepers making some decent stops to keep the deadlock intact. Omar Marmoush had the best chance of the first half, but Mike Penders produced a brilliant save to deny him.
The second half was more of the same, with neither side able to carve out a clear goalscoring opportunity. The deadlock was finally broken in the 77th minute, when Penders scored an own goal from a corner.
The hosts then went down to 10 men after Cole Palmer saw a second yellow card. Mathys Tel then capitalised on the numerical advantage and scored his side’s second goal with a brilliant solo effort in the 87th minute.
This marked Tottenham’s second-ever win at Stamford Bridge, making it a wonderful outing for the under-fire North London side.

Storms have disrupted Premier League matches over the weekend, with heavy rainfall causing significant problems for the players. Rain continued to hammer down on Stamford Bridge from kick-off, and its impact was felt acutely by the players.
As Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville pointed out, the downpour caused waterlogging on the pitch, holding up the ball. Both Chelsea and Spurs are used to playing fluent, passing football, and this was not possible under the circumstances.

This led to a really muted start from both sides, with players struggling to advance into their opponents’ halves. Chelsea and Tottenham’s xG at the end of the first half read 0.24 and 0.43, respectively.
Expect more low-scoring games on Sunday if such weather persists.
Tottenham Hotspur surprised everyone at Stamford Bridge by absolutely dominating the ball in the first half, having three-fourths possession during the opening half-hour. They also had multiple shots on target, including one which Marmoush should have converted.
Chelsea eventually regrouped and found their footing in the match towards the end of the first half, with Antonin Kinsky making three saves within two minutes. Roberto De Zerbi will surely be frustrated at his side’s inability to capitalise on their dominance.
James Maddison recently returned from an 18-month injury layoff to make his first start in over a year against Coventry City. However, the England international’s return to professional football lasted less than five minutes after half-time.
The midfielder went down holding what appeared to be his thigh. He was eventually brought off and replaced by Conor Gallagher, and looked distraught as he walked off the pitch. BBC reporter Nizaar Kinsella blamed his injury on the poor weather conditions. This will be a big concern for De Zerbi ahead of the upcoming fixtures.
Conor Gallagher is coming on. To be honest, Maddison took several heavy tackles in this poor weather, I'd argue perhaps it wasn't the best match to utilise him in. https://t.co/GUhBahiunw

With Emiliano Martinez out after a head-on collision in the match against Everton, Mike Penders became the youngest goalkeeper to start a Premier League match for Chelsea. The Belgian had a fine outing for most of the match, making a superb save to deny Omar Marmoush from 10 yards out.
However, all that hard work came undone in the 76th minute. A cross was played in by Mateus Fernandes. Penders, under very little pressure from Jean Paul van Hecke, came out to punch the ball away. Instead, the ball struck his fist and went into his own goal. A horrible, horrible result for the young goalkeeper.

In the absence of Joao Pedro, the Chelsea frontline was completely anonymous, with both Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers being guilty of losing possession and being clueless with the ball.
Palmer then went ahead and made his night worse by earning a needless yellow card – and it could have been a straight red – for clattering into Mateus Fernandes after an off-the-ball incident.
Not content with this, the Chelsea No. 10 then saw a second yellow card for standing on Gallagher’s ankles. A bit harsh, perhaps, but it capped off a woeful performance from the former Manchester City forward.
Fans will indeed question why Xabi Alonso kept Palmer and Rogers on the pitch for so long, especially with options like Danny Welbeck on the bench.
