CAF CHAMPIONSHIP BOMBSHELL! Rulani Mokwena Leads Pyramids Into Group Stages After 12th Straight Win

SOUTH AFRICAN FOOTBALL NEWS | 24 OCTOBER 2026

Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has continued his remarkable start at Egyptian giants Pyramids FC, guiding the club into the CAF Champions League group stages after a convincing 4-0 victory over South Sudanese side El Merriekh Bentiu on Saturday.

The emphatic result completed a 5-0 aggregate triumph for Pyramids, confirming their place in the next phase of Africa’s premier club competition. It also marked Mokwena’s 12th consecutive victory since taking charge of the Egyptian outfit, underlining the impressive impact he has made since arriving at the club.

Pyramids Deliver a Dominant Performance

Playing at home in Cairo, Pyramids approached the decisive second-leg encounter with confidence after securing a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg in South Sudan.

Abdelrahman Magdi opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, giving the hosts an early advantage. The attacker struck again just five minutes later, completing his brace and putting Pyramids firmly in control of the contest.

The Egyptian side continued to apply pressure and extended their lead through Mostafa Fathi, who found the net in first-half stoppage time.

With a three-goal advantage at the break, Mokwena’s men remained focused on completing the job. Their attacking determination paid off again in the 71st minute when Nadhir Benbouali scored the fourth goal, sealing a comprehensive victory.

The result demonstrated Pyramids’ attacking quality and their ability to turn a crucial continental fixture into a comfortable win.

Mokwena Continues His Impressive Run

For South African football supporters, Mokwena’s success represents another significant moment for a coach who previously played an important role at Mamelodi Sundowns.

His achievements at Pyramids are attracting attention across the continent, particularly given the pressure associated with competing for major honours in Egyptian football.

Winning 12 consecutive matches is a notable accomplishment, reflecting the team's consistency, confidence and ability to deliver results across competitions.

Pyramids, who won the CAF Champions League in the 2024/25 season, will now turn their attention to the group-stage campaign as they seek to challenge for continental honours once again.

Expectations Rise Ahead of the Group Stages

Qualification is an important milestone, but the challenge is far from over. The group stages will present tougher opponents and demand sustained performances from Mokwena’s squad.

The South African tactician will be expected to maintain the winning momentum while ensuring his players remain competitive in domestic and continental football.

For now, however, Mokwena and Pyramids have every reason to celebrate. Their commanding victory has secured progression, extended an extraordinary winning streak and strengthened the coach’s growing reputation in African football.

South African supporters will be watching closely to see whether Mokwena can guide Pyramids towards another memorable CAF Champions League campaign.
