Man Utd Ratings: Diogo Dalot Struggles Again, While Matheus Cunha Delivers Attacking Brilliance Despite Red Card

MANCHESTER UNITED achieved another remarkable comeback in Europe, securing a 3-2 victory over Roma, providing Michael Carrick with a much-needed uplift.

While United fans voiced their frustrations with ownership, the coaching quality was questioned again due to a recurring defensive failure.

A Bruno Fernandes spot-kick and two goals from Matheus Cunha completed the turnaround

Despite trailing 2-0 at halftime due to goals from Matias Soule and a Donyell Malen penalty, United managed to avoid their first 10-game winless streak since March 1978.

Faced with negativity from their supporters, the team rebounded thanks to a penalty from Bruno Fernandes and two goals from Matheus Cunha.

Here’s how SunSport’s Katherine Walsh rated and slated the United players from a lively Old Trafford.

Senne Lammens – 6

The Belgian shot-stopper faced a tough task behind what can be termed the weakest defense in the Champions League. A critical save prevented a 3-0 deficit before halftime.

He benefitted from a quieter second half once his teammates started performing.

Leny Yoro – 5

Starting at right-back, the central defender often found himself sprinting towards his own area, as Carrick urged his players to push forward. His retreat led to the conceding of a penalty, yet he displayed some strength in attack, managing to hold his ground amid the chaos.

Harry Maguire – 6

Guilty of several poor decisions, Maguire’s mistakes often put Lammens in precarious situations. He did improve in the second half when Roma’s offense had calmed down. He had three opportunities from set pieces but failed to convert.

Ayden Heaven – 5

As a young defender, Heaven faced overwhelming pressure, especially after being pressed into action following a teammate’s suspension. He struggled with a penalty decision and appeared outmatched at times.

Diogo Dalot – 4

Dalot’s defensive lapses allowed Soule to open the scoring with ease. Carrick’s tactical setup placed Dalot and Yoro as makeshift wingers, resulting in chaotic defending at times. Surprisingly, he assisted Cunha’s equalizer.

Kobbie Mainoo – 6

Back in the lineup after a break, Mainoo lost possession too easily leading up to Roma’s first goal. However, he made a notable effort with a long-range shot before halftime, marking United’s first shot on target.

Carlos Baleba – 4

Expectations for the £70m signing fell flat as he struggled to keep pace throughout the match. He also suffered a hamstring injury just moments into the second half.

Bruno Fernandes – 6

The captain gained momentum after scoring a second penalty attempt. However, he hadn’t registered a goal or assist since early September. His first-half performance was disappointing, showcasing his frustration with teammates’ decisions.

Amad – 5

While Amad got into scoring positions, he lacked clinical finishing. Without a goal since December 14, he was substituted in favor of Shea Lacey, who immediately provided a greater threat.

Matheus Cunha – 8

United’s standout performer, Cunha earned a penalty, scored twice, and celebrated passionately with the fans. He thrived on the crowd’s energy and continued to excel throughout the match, though he received a second yellow card for his exuberance.

Bryan Mbeumo – 6

Involved in plays with Cunha, Mbeumo had an unfortunate moment when his strike struck the woodwork just after Fernandes’ penalty.

SUBS:

Youri Tielemans (Baleba, 50) – 6

Made a positive impact after coming on.

Shea Lacey (Amad, 75) – 7

In a brief appearance, Lacey outperformed Amad and provided a key assist for Cunha’s second goal.

Lisandro Martinez (Heaven, 75) – 6

Made his return to the pitch after a previous suspension and faced some disapproval from the crowd upon his substitution.

Matthijs de Ligt (Maguire, 88) – N/A

Mason Mount (Fernandes, 88) – N/A
