Chicago Fire Pay the Price for Indiscipline as Mbokazi and Dithejane Suffer 3-1 Defeat to Philadelphia Union
South African footballers Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Puso Dithejane were both involved as Chicago Fire FC suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer (MLS) on Wednesday night, October 14, 2026.
The defeat at Soldier Field proved particularly frustrating for Chicago, who had taken the lead before a costly red card changed the complexion of the encounter. Philadelphia capitalised on their numerical advantage after the break, scoring three unanswered goals to complete an impressive comeback victory.
For the South African duo, the match offered another opportunity to gain valuable experience in American football, although the final result left Chicago with plenty to reflect on.
Chicago Take the Lead Before Disaster Strikes
Chicago started the contest with determination and appeared capable of securing a positive result against an in-form Philadelphia side.
Their persistence paid off shortly before half-time when Maren Haile-Selassie opened the scoring in the 44th minute. The winger finished from close range after good attacking work involving Jonathan Bamba and Noah Allen, giving the home supporters reason to believe their team could claim all three points.
However, Chicago's advantage was short-lived.
Defender Jack Elliott, who had already received a yellow card earlier in the first half, was sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second booking.
The dismissal forced Chicago to play the entire second half with 10 men, leaving head coach Gregg Berhalter with a difficult tactical challenge.
South African defender Mbokazi was also cautioned during the first half, receiving a yellow card in the 34th minute.
Philadelphia Punish Chicago After the Break
Philadelphia Union wasted little time exploiting their numerical advantage.
Milan Iloski restored parity in the 49th minute, finishing a move that began with Bruno Damiani as the visitors increased the pressure on the depleted Chicago defence.
The comeback gathered momentum six minutes later when Damiani scored Philadelphia's second goal in the 55th minute. The forward found space inside the penalty area and finished after receiving an assist from young midfielder Cavan Sullivan.
Damiani then completed his brace in the 67th minute, converting another opportunity following a pass from Jovan Lukic.
The two goals underlined Philadelphia's attacking quality and Chicago's growing difficulties in containing the visitors with one player fewer.
Dithejane entered the contest as a second-half substitute in the 67th minute, but his introduction could not prevent Chicago from slipping to defeat.
What the Result Means for Chicago
Despite the setback, Chicago remained fourth in the Eastern Conference standings at the end of the match, keeping their hopes of securing another postseason appearance alive.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, extended their winning streak to eight consecutive MLS matches and their unbeaten run to 14 games.
For Mbokazi and Dithejane, attention will now turn to Chicago's next fixture against the New England Revolution on October 17.
The defeat serves as a reminder that discipline can be decisive at the highest level. Chicago demonstrated their ability to compete before Elliott's dismissal, but their opponents ruthlessly exploited the extra space and numerical advantage.
With the season approaching a crucial stage, Chicago will need a stronger defensive response and greater discipline if they are to maintain their position among the Eastern Conference's leading teams.
