The Brazilians are set to host Gallants in the Round of 16 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, looking to rebound from their continental defeat and continue their quest for domestic trophies.
Sundowns were knocked out of the CAF Champions League on Friday, ending their title defense after drawing 1-1 against Angolan club Wiliete SC, with the away-goals rule sealing their fate.
This exit represents a notable setback for the Tshwane club, who had success in continental competitions last season. The last occasion Sundowns did not make it to the Champions League group stage was in 2015, when they were eliminated by TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In light of the recent setback, Matthews recognized the emotional toll it may take on the team but emphasized the necessity of moving forward, as there are plenty of trophies still available this season.
“We need to reflect after the game, but it’s crucial to take a step forward,” he remarked.
“It is very tough to move on from what happened, but ultimately, you have to look ahead because there are more competitions to fight for.
“Winning the Champions League is significant in Africa, but we still have numerous trophies to aim for and win.”
Now focusing on the Carling Knockout Cup, Sundowns face a familiar adversary in Gallants, who knocked them out of the same tournament at the same stage last season.
In that match at Lucas Moripe Stadium, Bahlabane Ba Ntwa progressed after a penalty shootout.
However, Matthews played down any notion that Tuesday’s match is about seeking revenge, underscoring that Sundowns’ main goal is to win matches, irrespective of the opponent.
“It’s not a matter of revenge,” he stated.
“Whoever we are up against, we need to secure a win. Our focus is on winning, and that is what truly matters.
“Thankfully, we get to play Marumo Gallants again, and we intend to win the match. That’s our objective.”
Sundowns are eager to respond positively to their Champions League exit by securing their place in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals, as they shift their focus back to the domestic titles still within reach.
The Brazilians last claimed this competition in the 2019/20 season under the legendary coach Pitso Mosimane.
