The Democratic Republic of the Congo U15s began the first FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival in Azerbaijan with a narrow 3-2 defeat by El Salvador.
The Leopardeaux twice found the net through Shina Charles and Lobwa Elie, but could not prevent the Salvadorians from taking victory in a closely contested match at the Hovsan Sports Complex in Baku.
Despite the result, the Congolese side displayed character and attacking ambition throughout the encounter. Their two goals highlighted their offensive quality, although El Salvador’s efficiency in the decisive moments ultimately settled the contest.
The defeat was a frustrating start for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, whose lack of continental experience was exposed at key stages. However, the tournament remains open, and the team will need to address its defensive errors while retaining the confidence shown in attack before the next matchday.
