Mack Hansen has named Finlay Bealham as his worst Ireland roommate—and it’s about more than just the snoring.
Speaking alongside Andrew Porter on the first episode of the new Irish Rugby Podcast, Hansen offered a glimpse of life away from the training pitch.
The Connacht winger has shared with several of Ireland’s front-row forwards, including Tom O’Toole and Bealham, and said he is currently rooming with provincial teammate Sean Jansen.
But when asked about his previous experiences, one name stood out.
“Finlay is arguably, and I love Finlay, arguably the worst. Just he’s a bad snorer,” Hansen said.
Getting to sleep is only part of the challenge. According to Hansen, Bealham also struggles to let a quiet moment pass without checking whether his roommate is annoyed with him.
“He’ll be sitting there, and he’ll go, ‘Are you mad at me?’”
Even after Hansen reassures him, the question soon comes around again.
“And then two minutes later he’ll go, ‘Yeah, are, are you mad at me?’ And he’d just, like, keep doing that.”
“Even if you tell him to shut up, he’ll just keep doing it.”
The running joke gets a mixed reception from Hansen, who explained that it moves between being funny and wearing a little thin.
“And then it’s really annoying again, and then it’s funny again.”
Porter, meanwhile, had his own sleeping arrangements to discuss.
The Leinster prop usually shares with Rónan Kelleher while away with Ireland, and their first night back together after a lengthy gap quickly reminded him of the challenges involved.
“He snores so bad,” Porter said.
The conversation prompted the suggestion that Kelleher should be given a room of his own, although the players weren’t convinced that would solve the problem for anyone staying nearby.
Hansen’s assessment of Bealham was delivered with affection, and he made clear that the front-rower’s persistent questions are part of a running gag.
For Ireland’s roommates, though, it appears a little peace and quiet can be difficult to come by.
