IT IS A BUSY weekend on the sporting calendar, with the Springboks opening their November campaign in Italy, Mamelodi Sundowns chasing continental silverware and the Carling Knockout quarter-finals continuing at home.
Formula 1 and tennis, meanwhile, also have important dates, making for a packed few days of action.
Here’s how the sporting weekend will unfold.
The Springboks face Italy in Turin on Saturday in the fourth round of the Nations Championship, with kick-off at 1.40pm South African time.
Rassie Erasmus has selected an experienced match-23 for the encounter, with Siya Kolisi captaining a side featuring the likes of Malcolm Marx, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Damian de Allende and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. Salmaan Moerat returns to the match-day group after missing the earlier part of the season through injury.
Italy have made 10 changes to their starting team, largely because of injuries. Flanker Samuele Locatelli is set to make his international debut, while hooker Giacomo Nicotera will captain the side. The hosts will be looking to make the most of home advantage against the world champions.
There is also plenty at stake in the Carling Knockout, with three quarter-final ties scheduled after Mamelodi Sundowns booked their semi-final place with a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows earlier in the week.
Defending champions Orlando Pirates host Sekhukhune United at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday at 3pm. The teams have already met three times this season, with Pirates winning all three encounters. Sekhukhune, however, have since changed coaches, with Papi Zothwane taking charge.
Kaizer Chiefs meet Siwelele at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday at 6pm, while Stellenbosch host AmaZulu at Danie Craven Stadium, also at 6pm. The winners will join Sundowns in the semi-finals.
Sundowns have another major assignment on Sunday when they host Algeria’s USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup at Loftus Versfeld. Kick-off is at 3pm.
The Brazilians qualified as 2025/26 CAF Champions League winners, while USM Alger claimed the Confederation Cup. The clubs are each seeking a second Super Cup title, with Sundowns having won the competition in 2017 and the Algerians lifting it in 2023.
Internationally, the São Paulo Grand Prix takes centre stage in Formula 1. The race takes place at Interlagos on Sunday at 5pm South African time, following qualifying on Saturday at 6pm.
Kimi Antonelli arrives in Brazil as the newly crowned 2026 world champion after securing the title at the Mexico City Grand Prix. He leads the standings on 380 points, ahead of Max Verstappen on 261 and Lewis Hamilton on 259.
The focus now shifts to the battle for the remaining positions and the opportunity for the Brazilian crowd to cheer on home driver Gabriel Bortoleto.
Tennis fans have two tournaments to follow. The Paris Masters reaches its conclusion on Sunday, with the singles semi-finals scheduled for Saturday.
The season-ending WTA Finals begin on Sunday at Indian Wells in California, where the top eight singles players will compete through to November 15.
Elena Rybakina heads into the tournament as defending champion, while Aryna Sabalenka, Mirra Andreeva and Coco Gauff are among the contenders.
