'There is no foul' - Steve Evans on disallowed Joe Quigley header in Bristol Rovers' goalless draw

"There's simply no foul when the ball ends up in the net. There is no foul."

Bristol Rovers manager Steve Evans said, "I wouldn't take a point," and was disappointed with the referee's decision to give a foul in the box from a free-kick in the closing stages, which resulted in Joe Quigley's header finding the back of the net, as his side ended their four-match losing run in League Two with a 0-0 draw against Swindon Town.

Ian Holloway's side missed a couple of big chances in the first-half through Aaron Drinan and Matty Virtue, but Rovers were the better team in the second 45. They rarely tested Connor Ripley, though, and ultimately both teams had to settle for a point, but it was another game without a win for the Gas.

Reflecting on the goalless draw at The Mem, Evans said: "No, I wouldn't take a point. I think arguably we could be one or two down in the first 10 minutes. I think that's part of the conditions and partly the way that Swindon set up with three number tens. It almost replicates a little bit towards how the Salford model is, and they had great success at it at Barnet, so we did some preparation, but it took the boys maybe 10,15 minutes to get a grip of that.

"And when we did, I thought then we came into the game, and we controlled large aspects of the game. I think we had a couple of chances with Fabrizio as well before half-time - he should certainly, I just said to him, you should score.

"And he's got high standards. His finishing in training yesterday was sensational, but as I said to him, you don't get an apple for scoring a goal in training. You get an apple for scoring goals at The Mem."

He added: "But we come in at half-time, and we said to them, let's play to the conditions, let's play up to Joe Quigley, and let's get off him and let's move the ball around. Thought we played some brilliant football in the second half. I think Joe Quigley has been assaulted for 75 minutes of the game. He gets no decisions.

"And then right on time [at the end of the game], and I've looked at it back because I didn't know at the time, but I've looked at it back. There's simply no foul when the ball ends up in the net. There is no foul.

"And the referee is an experienced referee, but I'm thinking he's looking at the clock. He's 20 seconds over the time he's allocated, and he's thinking no one's going to score, so everyone will go away happy, but I'll go and see him. We're not happy, Seb [Stockbridge]."

On the decision to disallow Joe Quigley's header, which found the back of the net, in the dying stages of the game, due to a foul by Kofi Balmer on James Debayo in the box, the Scotsman also said, "It's one of the last five games, horrendous decision, apologies, emails. Mike Jones, EFL head of referees, phoning me up. Howard Webb phoning me up.

"The referee arrives at the stadium this morning, talking about decisions that he's watched because they look at them as a group, and he's shaking his head. Well, he's now part of that group for this weekend. He's going to be looking at one."

The 63-year-old also praised the supporters, with an attendance of just under 10,000 at The Mem, while saying he understands the pressures and expectations of managing a big club. "They were tremendous today, by the way, the fans," he said.

"Big fanbase and you've got Steve Evans walking in the door and Paul Raynor - expectation goes through the roof. So we have to all deliver against that expectation [as] players and staff.

Next up for the Gas is a trip to Fleetwood Town on Saturday, October 31, who have picked up 14 points from their opening 12 league games.
